How did Tom Riddle become to look like Voldemort?

Tom Marvolo Riddle... he just mixed up the letters until he saw something fitting, a name he knew one day many would fear. The curse backfiring did a number on his appearance, not to mention he is at least 70 in the first movie. Old people generally go bald.
